Lettering Guidance - Refer to Carolina & N-W: The Legacy of the Carolina & North-Western Railway by Matthew C. Bumgarner.

Alco RS-2's were delivered to the C&N-W in 1948 painted in Virginia green with yellow gold striping, lettering and numbering. Units 1-4 had the new herald, two round circles surrounding the railway’s initials, on the cab sides. Herald lettering moved to the short hood sides of the units.

The RS-3’s assigned to the Danville & Western were C&N-W #5 and 6.

The RS-3’s assigned to the Blue Ridge were C&N-W #7 and 8.

The RS-3 assigned to the Yadkin was #9.

The RS-3 assigned to the High Point, Randleman, Asheboro & Southern was #10.

RS-11 #11 was purchased for the C&N-W proper and was the only Alco RS-11 owned by Southern Railway.

The RS-3's were painted sylvan green with gold and white striping with the emblem on the short nose.

In 1958 Southern started painting all its locomotives black with white and gold stripes but C&N-W name retained until 1965 repainting.

C&N-W steel cabooses X-30 through X-34 were assigned to Hickory in 1948. Later X-25 to X-36 were assigned to C&N-W and affiliated lines X-16 was a wooden center copula Southern Railway car purchased second hand, and lasted until sometime in the late 1950's.
