Reference - Akron, Canton & Youngstown and Akron & Barberton Belt by Robert Lucas and the ACY Historical Society, Scotch Plaines, NJ: Morning Sun Books, 2015. Pp. 70-74 covers freight cars.
Suitable Models - These are 50 ton, two-bay, rib-sided,
peaked end hoppers, 30’ long.
HO-scale: Athearn has a suitable carbody.
N-scale: Manufacturers don't offer 50 ton hoppers, but many have 55 ton
hoppers, close enough. Atlas is the only manufacturer that has
peak ends on a 55 ton open hopper, it's the closest match to the
correct car. Microtrains and Bachman make 55 ton hoppers, close but do not have the peaked ends. Bluford Shops has a USRA 30' 6" two-bay hopper. A detail oriented modeler could add a peaks to the hopper ends.
Properly stored, these decals should remain usable for many years.
Acknowledgments - Special thanks go to Susan and the late Wade Griffis, of Jenison , MI, ACY Historical Society, and Ron Roberts of Rail Graphics, without whom this project would never have happened. Special thanks to Steve Holzheimer, of Lakewood, OH, Nigel Phillips, of Reston, VA, and Ryan Saltsman, of Ravenna, OH for inspiring the N-scale set.
