Reference - Akron,
Canton & Youngstown and Akron & Barberton Belt by Robert Lucas
and the ACY Historical Society, Scotch Plaines, NJ: Morning Sun Books,
2015.
Pp. 70-74 covers freight cars.
Suitable Models - AC&Y Box Car Modeling, Mainline Modeler, March 1988, Pp. 54-7, by Mont Switzer, tells how to build these cars. Car bodies by Accurail and Intermountain make plausible starting points, that from Athearn does not.
Car History - Mont’s article mentioned above covers this as well.
Why Two Kinds of Doors? - In short. 6 foot door 40' boxcars were good for grain but not so good for lumber. But a 10' slider was hard to seal for grain and was still too short for lumber. So add a 6' plug and a 10' slider and make the car 50' and you had either a 16' lumber opening or a 10' grain opening. My thanks to Frank Mellott for this explanation.
Properly stored, these decals should remain usable for many years.
Acknowledgments - Special thanks go to Susan and the late Wade Griffis, of Jenison , MI, ACY Historical Society, and Ron Roberts of Rail Graphics, without whom this project would never have happened.
